Useful books and websites for experimental biologyArticle created: Sept 16, 2007 Article by: Jeremiah Faith
Books At the bench. A Laboratory Navigator Barker | a good book if you are just starting in the lab | Molecular Cloning Sambrook and Russell | the standard molecular biology manuals in most labs (3 volumes). These volumes are hard to understand when you're first starting, but provide an essential source of detailed information later. Every lab should have a copy. | Websites | NEBcutter | Very useful when doing anything with restriction enzymes | | Oligonucleotide properties calculator | I use this tool when I design primers by hand for cloning genes. | | IDT's OligoAnalyzer | I use this tool when I want to create or inspect the properties of heterodimers. | | Primer3 | I use Primer3 to design any other type of primer. You give it a sequence and selection criterion (e.g. 59 < melting temperature < 62), and it gives you pretty good primers. There's a command line version for big jobs. | | Protocol Online | Lot's links to protocols and advice. The forums can sometimes be a useful place to debug problems, as someone may have had the same problem already. Kinda hard to locate stuff here though and the quality of the protocols the site links to is pretty hit-or-miss. | | Biosize Bio | A great new molecular biology blog with a diverse array of molecular biology articles. Not dry or boring. The "tech tips", "around the blogs", and "careers" categories are well-worth reading.. |
